‘Forget dangerous drivers, what about the reckless texters?’

I'd like to suggest a new fine to Dubai Police - a fine for those texting while walking along the road.

I ask for this to help safeguard us drivers who could, potentially, become victims thanks to the foolish people who don’t want to look up from their phones while crossing the street.

I don’t text or speak on the phone while driving, but what if the person walking isn’t looking up while strolling across because they’re busy staring at their phone screens. If they get hit by a car simply because they haven’t looked as they are fixated on their screens, how is some poor driver at fault for not being able to break to avoid hitting them?

Most disturbing is to see kids walking alongside, or following a parent, while they're busy talking or texting.

Of course it IS the driver’s responsibility to be safe, follow rules, not speed, not text or talk while driving - but even after doing all that, if people just pop out of nowhere on the street because they aren’t looking, it’s really their own fault that someone couldn’t break in time to miss them.

Why should it always be the drivers who get into trouble - and in this case it would be for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

“They don't need to be wary of the fact they're texting, they have to be careful of all the lunatic drivers who don't stop to let them cross the road. So many times I've approached a zebra crossing (texting or not) and the driver shows no regard for the fact that I'm about to cross...nearly knocking me over. It's about time a law was introduced to ensure drivers have to stop when someone wants to cross.”

“I've never encountered this in all my years of driving in Dubai, what you're calling for sounds very nanny-state-like, fines for texting while walking? What next? Fines for not wearing a seatbelt while on an escalator?”

“Yeah, sure. It's pedestrians causing all those crashes. Behave. Everyone should be careful but particularly when you're in control of a couple of tons of very fast metal”
