‘Loud music and lousy service - who is keeping shop?’
Yesterday I ventured into some of the shops in a mall at the Abu Dhabi end of Dubai and was shocked at the decline in customer service and the volume of the inappropriate music.
At one popular European franchise, I had to take my son and leave the shop as the American rap music being blasted was filled with obscene language!
Another shop that sells children’s clothes had music so loud the clerk couldn’t hear me when I was trying to ask for help.

At another I was trying to purchase something and had to hunt down a sales clerk who then had to go to the storage area to get someone to take my money - everyone was on a break!
Another small shop had no sales people in sight but I could hear chatter and giggling from the back room. Had I been dishonest, I could have taken half the shop with me. I eventually left the items I wished to purchase on the counter and left without them.
It amazes me that this behaviour is tolerated in a country where one of the favourite past times is shopping and the use of obscene language or gestures
can put you in jail.
