‘Try giving us an indication of which way you’re going’

7DAYS

I know we’ve had all the stories and letters of reckless drivers and those with bad driving skills.

This is not a rant or a letter to slam the morons we have to deal with on our motorways every day. It’s a genuine question and I’d love it if someone could supply me with an answer: Why do drivers here refuse to use their indicators?

I honestly don’t get it - they are there for a reason, just as much as your accelerator. Depending on the make and model of your car, the indicator is actually the same stick you use to flash at people to get out of your way.

  1. letter

I know we’re a selfish bunch here in the UAE, caring only for ourselves but you can make the roads safer by flicking that little stick (not the finger) up or down to inform those behind you that you intend to move, instead of us all having to guess which way you’re intending on going. It takes very little effort and you can even do it while talking on your mobile!

Go on, try it, you might like it.

There’s a sense of satisfaction about knowing you’ve provided others with a hint of what you’re about to do and possibly averted a fatal accident in the process.

Think and wink.

“Unfortunately most people only act considerately if forced to do so. Because the police do not enforce the use of indicators with fine/warnings, people don't bother to do it. There needs to be much wider enforcement as well as publicity campaigns reminding people to use their indicators and follow all other basic rules of the road. Only then will we see a significant improvement in road safety. Until then, people will continue to lose their lives on Dubai's roads at the excessive rate we see now.”

“Recent studies in Europe have shown that it takes an IQ of 37 to operate indicators. It has also shown that it takes an IQ of 71 to operate them correctly. I guess that answers a lot of questions.”

“A recent study has shown that it takes an IQ of 37 to use indicators. However, and more importantly it takes an IQ of 72 to use them correctly.
    I suppose that explains all.”

“I agree with Gavtek. Most American made cars have RED indicators which are the same colour as the braking lights. Not at all helpful. The other day was driving down Business bay and this bloke in a Jeep Wrangler, top down, cigarette in hand, mobile phone in the other was changing lanes, obviously without indicating. You'd think he'd be blessed with just plain driving etiquette if not common sense eh??”

“The use of indicators was the first lesson I've learned when I took my driving classes here four years back, and I still apply the rules to this date. From experience on the road, those who don't know how to use indicators and/or road safety conduct are people who were privileged not to take lessons here in the UAE. I think RTA should try to sit and review their rules on giving licence.”

“Good question! Also, why do people think that if they indicate to switch lanes a magical space will open up to allow them over instantly making the other cars move out of their way?”

“Indicating is a sign of weakness in Dubai. If you tell people which way you're going then they can cut you up and block you so drivers like that element of surprise here”

“Sometimes I don't know what's worse, those who don't indicate, or those who think that if they indicate then that allows them to change lane regardless if it is safe to do so.

On the subject of indicators, I've noticed (and almost crashed into) lots of American-made cars whose rear indicators flash red instead of orange, making it very difficult to see if they're indicating or braking, especially if they're doing both! And at night, it's even worse. There's no logic or reason to it, it just baffles me how anyone can think that's a good idea.”
