The recent criticism of Aishwarya Rai by some Indian media is staggering.

They have said the actress and new mum is letting down her fans by not shedding the weight gained during her pregnancy fast enough.

How could anyone view this as valid criticism of a new mum, even one who is in the public eye as much as Rai?

A newborn requires constant attention, 24 hours a day.

The only way that Rai could return swiftly to her trim figure would be to hit the gym for hours on end. This would require handing over the care of her child to someone during key months when mother and baby are supposed to bond. I'm sure husband Abhishek Bachchan is around to help, however anatomy dictates that there are some things a man cannot do.

Of course, Rai is up against plenty of other celebs who did just that, for example Victoria Beckham.

Yet, you have feel these stars are sacrificing a lot for their careers. There will always be another record, another film or another fashion show. Put those early months of your child's life will only happen once.

And surely these celebrity mums are talented enough to still be in demand after a break of six months to a year? In some cases, perhaps not.

However, in the case of Rai, there is little doubt her fans will still be there and she should be receiving praise for putting her family first, not criticism.

“Whether a mother or an actress the child is more important than the money earned. Aish just has to listen to her Heart rather than listening to critics”

“She is now a mother and not an actress who needs to have a zero figure. She looks cute being plump too :)”

“'I'm sure husband Abhishek Bachchan is around to help, however anatomy dictates that there are some things a man cannot do.' LOL! Im not a fan of Aishwarya but she was ok after giving birth but after some time put on even more weight, so its not baby weight, she must be busy tending to her lil one to exercise. Leave her alone, she is busy she has a life, and a newborn I'm sure hitting the gym is the last thing on her mind. Victoria Beckham looks ill she restricts her diet too much hence the reason she bounced back so quickly after giving birth to 4 kids or maybe its good genes who knows but she does not eat carbs in cakes, sweets etc she said so in an interview so that also helps. I have never seen photos of Victoria hitting the gym. Celebs do have to look good because of the industry they are in, and granted Aishwarya is looking much older and not as slim as she used to be, but she should be left alone, I'm sure if she decides to do a movie soon the producers will probably tell her to lose weight and if she cant she always has the option of surgery since she has altered her looks in the past anyway getting her nose and teeth fixed. Whatever her choice, people should leave her alone.”

“There are two things wrong with the criticism levelled at Ash for her weight. One, a person's weight is a private matter; nobody has a right to have an opinion about it. Second, what's wrong with having a little meat on the bones? The pictures of skeletal models on various magazine covers encourage an unhealthy body image among women. That is not how normal women look. Normal women have curves, and as long as you are healthy, it is okay to have them! Be proud of being a woman and do not let anyone impose on you their criteria of beauty.”

“Absolutely right! Aish is doing the right thing by putting her child first. Don't these people have better things to do than critcise someone's weight? Aish is very beautiful and the first chance they get to criticize a flaw they jump on it! But it's not a flaw, it's a war wound of motherhood and aish should be proud! Could it b jealousy on their part? Aish will always b beautiful no matter her weight. If they want something to criticize how about pryanka the home wrecker? Just a thought. Aish, u go girl, do ur thing ur true fans will always b there for u, god bless”
