Appeal in bounced cheque case rejected
Entrepreneur Safi Qurashi has had his appeal in a Dhs7.1 million bounced cheque case rejected.
Qurashi’s case was heard at Dubai Cassation Court today which ruled that the conviction and three-year jail term would stand.
The British businessman, who bought Great Britain on Dubai’s World Islands, was last week freed after two further bounced cheque cases were quashed by the court.
He had been given a seven-year jail term for the three cases but was freed because he had served more than his time behind bars for the remaining charge.
However in a dramatic twist Qurashi was rearrested and then bailed when a company filed two further charges against him at Jebel Ali Police Station.
Dubai Public Prosecution has now referred him to Dubai Court of Misdemeanors for these two extra bounced cheque cases which amount to Dhs6.6 million.
No court date has yet been set for the first hearing.
Qurashi was reunited with his family on Wednesday. His children had campaigned tirelessly for their father’s release through their campaign ‘Justice for my Dad’.

“If he is a criminal then I suppose most are criminals as there must be untold amounts of post dated and security cheques out there in the system. Its NOT just about those who want to be paid , what about those who have paid and don't ever get what they paid for . How are they protected. It flawed system!”

“Cheques should be civil matters, this case highlights how easy it is for individuals and companies to file criminal check fraud charges in scenarios where often the receiver of the cheque is not entitled to the value of the cheque contractually. I hope the due process of law is upheld.”
