Baby-killer maid freed by judge for showing remorse
A housemaid who killed her baby has been spared jail despite being convicted of murder.
Dubai Court of First Instance had heard how the 35-year-old Ethiopian had an affair with a 29-year-old Indian driver and became pregnant.
She gave birth to the baby girl at her employer’s home, wrapped the child in fabric and placed her in a bag inside a closet.
After six hours the youngster died. The judge in the case, though, said the maid had “shown deep regret” for what she had done and was, therefore, given a one-year suspended sentence by the court and will be deported.
Official records state that the maid’s Emirati employers discovered the tragedy when searching through her bags. A family member said: “My grandfather asked me to prepare tickets to send her home because she was always suffering from pain in her stomach. I told her to take a shower before we went to the airport and started searching her bags with my grandmother.”
The maid caught the pair searching her belongings and grabbed the bundle of fabric containing the child. She admitted to the family that it contained a dead baby.
The family called police.
