Boys of Summer - Trip to the Kartdrome
The summer can be tough for family guys left to fend for themselves but there’s still plenty to do even if the wife and kids are away...
Not long left before the wife and kids get back from their summer holidays? Want to pack as much action into as short a space of time as possible? Then head to the Kartdrome for an adrenaline-filled 15 minutes behind the wheel and the chance to embrace your inner Luke Skywalker at Lasertag.
I got the guys together and started off with a lasertag session. It’s gloriously nineties, complete with Leftfield’s brilliant ‘Leftism’ album playing, plus laser packs with colsigns that are so uncool they hurt. You can be ‘Superman’, ‘Assassin’ and ‘Rambo’ for a short time.

After choosing a free-for-all ‘Counterstrike’ style shoot-em-up as opposed to team play, I adopted a stealth approach keeping low to the ground - skills acquired during family arguments. I’m rewarded with fourth place and some pretty peachy shots to boot. Respectable.
But, having missed the daily battle on the roads during the summer, I’m ready for action when we head over to the kart track. Taking corners at speed (without texting, or applying make-up I must add) and putting my foot down in the straights, got me fired up. Fastest lap wins but there’s still bragging rights for the most overtaking so keep your foot down.
Fifteen minutes doesn’t sound value for money but just 10 minutes in I was dripping with sweat and my arms starting to shake. It’s a great way to spend time with your mates. Oh, and winning - there’s no hiding from the stats as you get a handy printout to show the family you’ve put your ‘spare’ time to good use.
