Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi confirmed life sentences for three men convicted of hashish and cannabis possession
The trio had appealed that sentence which carried a jail term of 24 years. However, the appeal court upheld the ruling of the criminal court so the men took their case to the supreme court.
Prosecutors said the three men were arrested after undercover police officers struck a bogus deal with them to sell some drugs. The men brought the hashish and cannabis to a meeting point in Ajman.
The trio had agreed to a deal to sell the drugs to the agents for Dhs1,500. The men had have consistently denied any involvement in the case.
The trio’s lawyer argued that the translator used during investigations twisted the defendants’ statements to mean that they admitted to the charges despite never confessing to them. The court also ordered that the men be deported after they have finished serving their jail terms.
