Dealers go to jail for life
Three drug dealers have had their life sentence confirmed by the highest court in the UAE.
The Bangladeshi men were caught in possession of hashish and cannabis during a police sting by undercover agents, the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi heard.
Ajman Criminal Court had sentenced the trio to life in prison after they were found guilty of possessing 293g of the drugs with the intention to deal.
The trio had appealed that sentence which carried a jail term of 24 years. However, the appeal court upheld the ruling of the criminal court so the men took their case to the supreme court.
Prosecutors said the three men were arrested after undercover police officers struck a bogus deal with them to sell some drugs. The men brought the hashish and cannabis to a meeting point in Ajman.
The trio had agreed to a deal to sell the drugs to the agents for Dhs1,500. The men had have consistently denied any involvement in the case.
The trio’s lawyer argued that the translator used during investigations twisted the defendants’ statements to mean that they admitted to the charges despite never confessing to them. The court also ordered that the men be deported after they have finished serving their jail terms.
