Maradona signed a two-year deal in May 2011. He was popular with fans and helped put United Arab Emirates football on the map, however his team finished eighth in the 12-team league.
Maradona had still been expected to return for a second season but was left vulnerable when the Al Wasl board was replaced in June.

“To my opinion he should have been banned from anything related to sports a long time ago. The way he threw his career down the drainage and he let down all his fans and supporters in Naples, Italy and eventually worldwide shows that he is not a man to be trusted and followed. I am Italian, might be a bit too loud in what I am saying but I am glad he is out of Dubai!”

“From the moment it was announced that the great player Maradona will be coaching a UAE football club, I knew that he will not stay for long because of his lacklustre coaching or on & off court antics or both.”
