Dubai Court honors couple who married with least dowry
The head of Dubai Courts has honoured the couple who got married last year with the smallest dowry – just one dirham.
The move, by Director General Ahmed Saeed bin Hazim, aims to reduce the amount of dowries and other costs related to weddings in the UAE.
According to a reporyt on national news agency WAM, Mohammed Abdul Rahman, Head of the Executive Committee of the Dubai Courts' Club, said the initiative of ‘The Least Dowry’ is intended to honour the couple who got married last year with the least dowry in order to create awareness on the reduction of dowries and ease the burden on marriage candidates.
WAM said he added that the dowry problem has become a disturbing phenomenon for many families who find themselves forced to incur high costs for wedding ceremonies.
He called for parents not to pay excess costs for the wedding ceremonies and concerts.
He said the marriage officers registered dowries from one dirham to Dhs50, 000, which is the highest specified limit in accordance with the directives by the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
