Dubai Customs catch Dh140m cigarette smuggling operation
A general manager of a company based in Jebel Ali Free Zone is facing charges of customs evasion of about Dhs140 million in total.
Bur Dubai Chief Prosecutor Sami Salem Al Shamsi said a case was filed in court at the request of Dubai Customs against the manager on charges of evading customs regulations.
According to the charge filed by the prosecution, the firm smuggled different brands of cigarettes after processing 237 transactions through Dubai Customs' Mirsal electronic system.

“The question is how many other instances of customs evasion have gone undetected. In many countries customs is an area that is riddled with corruption and bribery and the authorities must implement a process of continous auditing. If not cigarettes it could be alchol and illegal drugs..not just coming into the country but leaving as Dubai may be used as a trans shippment point to move contraband to other MENA countries. However technology such as infra red scanning of containers should be used in the fight against illicit trading.”

“its about time the uae finally goes towards a truly greener n pollution free approach. i personally am so glad for the initiative taken by dubai(from wht i experienced yesterday) to stop the sale of cigarettes for a day. im not sure if smoking was banned for the day, but i sure did see a lot less people smoking around town. two thumbs up guys. =)”
