Dubai Duty Free opens border shop
World's biggest duty free retailer opens outlet at Hatta.
Dubai Duty Free has opened its first ‘border shop’ at Hatta, on the UAE’s shared frontier with Oman.
The world’s biggest duty free retailer has inaugurated the new 24-hour retail space near the customs and immigration offices at the Hatta-Oman border.
The new store will sell what the retailer has called “a selection of high-demand items” including confectionery, perfumes and tobacco – but not alcohol.
The border shop has been designed as a convenient stop off point for drivers crossing to and from Dubai.
Dubai Duty Free executive vice chairman Colm McLoughlin said the 42 square metre space was likely to expand in future.
“When we were first approached with the idea of establishing a border shop here at the Hatta-Oman border, we thought that the timing was good as there are plans in place to expand capacity at the border check points. So, while we have started with a relatively small retail unit, we would definitely be happy to grow this in line with the plans that are in place,” he said.
McLoughlin thanked officials from the Dubai Immigration Department and Dubai Customs for their co-operation on the border shop outlet.
