Dubai TV celeb burned by boiling drink
A TV presenter suffered second-degree burns when a cup of tea spilled on her lap.
Dina Butti, who appears on Dubai One, was on her way to Virgin Radio on Thursday morning when she stopped to buy tea at a cafe near Mall of the Emirates.
Disaster struck as she drove off and went to take a sip of her early-morning brew.
Butti, 28, said: “I picked up the tea cup, which was so hot I accidentally dropped it onto my lap, scalding me and almost causing me to get into an accident as I pulled off the road.”
The lifestyle-show presenter also drenched her mobile phone and couldn’t call for help. She said: “I was screaming with the pain. I got out of the car because I was sitting in the liquid. I thought if I took off my jeans it might help, but my skin was coming off with them. I couldn’t phone for help so I drove to Virgin. I was lucky it was only five minutes away. They called my husband who carried me into the hospital.
“They got me out of my jeans and got these cool pads on me which were amazing, they soaked up the heat and numbed me.
“I was in agony for the hour-and-a-half it took me to get to the hospital, with the pain so severe I could barely move or speak. It is honestly the strongest pain I have felt in my entire life.”
Doctors gave Butti a tetanus injection and strong antibiotics, bandaged her up and after a few hours she went home.
She said: “They told me initially they didn’t want me moving for two weeks. But after an appointment on Saturday they said I could go out. I can’t walk very well.”
Butti hopes publicising what happened will warn others not to repeat her mistake. She said: “I really want to raise awareness about drinking hot beverages while driving.
“I feel it’s important for people to understand just how dangerous it can be.”

“The fact is that a lot of people do drink hot beverages in cars. At certain gas stations, coffee shops have staff hold up menus at windows of cars in the gas queues, to encourage them to buy at the wheel. If someone is really in a rush and needs to drink a hot beverage in a car, they should let it sit in the cup holder for a few minutes to cool down, and use a travel lid. I think this woman did not have a travel lid on her tea cup (or took it off) and did not think to wait a few minutes for the tea to cool a little. It should serve as a warning to others, as this is indeed a very common practice.”

“Yes, the article is melodramatic. It's tabloid journalism. But is this a real issue? Yes. Despite what a bunch of comedians on these comments seem to think, getting second degree burns (which by the way take months to heal properly and require consultation with a plastic surgeon MINIMUM) is not normal from boiling tea. There was something wrong with the establishment that served this kind of beverage, and I personally am upset that 7days chose not to name and shame them. I would want nothing to do with that kind of establishment. They're the culprits here. I feel like people are losing sight of the point of the article because Dina's on television... that's not the point here that I see. Use of the word 'disaster' is melodramatic and badly written. But as someone who has experienced the pain of burns first hand this is NOT something to be scoffed at and is something no one should go through.”

“Ouch! Those kind of burns are really painful! Hope you recover well Dina.
I'm happy things like this are posted, at least someone has the guts to say stuff like this. How many times do I drive while focusing on other things, my coffee, my phone or the radio, with so many accidents already on the Dubai roads we don't need more reasons for more accidents..... hopefully everyone can take this seriously”

“I think banning hot tea is in order!!!! This should eliminate these "disasters" once an forall. Plesae someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the term "disaster" be better used for an earthquake, flood, aircraft crash?? Now it is also applied when a tv presenter burns herself!!!”

“Just few days ago I read the article about how women drivers are prone to accidents, and I found it hard to believe. After reading this princess crying for help after almost loosing control of the wheel because she spilled hot tea on her lap.....I can completely understand!”
