Dubai's 24-hour cigarette ban for World No Tobacco Day
Dubai Municipality is banning the sale of all tobacco products for 24 hours to mark World No Tobacco Day on Thursday.
World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31 and aims to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption.
Redha Salaman, Director of Public Health and Safety at Dubai Municipality, said: “The move is aimed at spreading awareness about the dangers of cigarette smoking to make people think about the dangers of tobacco consumption, as it kills millions of people and affects the public health.

“The civic body had announced a programme to regulate smoking in public places in 31 May 2007. It has honoured many individuals and establishments for taking firm steps against smoking to promote a healthy life style in the society.”
To support ‘Dubai without Smoking’ initiative of the municipality, 283 businesses, including shops, hypermarkets, supermarkets and petrol stations, will participate in the campaign. All restaurants and cafes are expected to cooperate with the civic body and participate in the campaign by stopping the sale of tobacco products during the day.
The volunteer participants include major business establishments such as Hyper Panda, Safeer Group, News Center, Cadolle, Spinneys, Carrefour, Choithram, Lulu, Maya, Family, West Zone and J-Mart.
Meanwhile, Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) is urging everyone to help make Abu Dhabi a tobacco-free emirate.
The call also coincides with World No Tobacco Day.
Dr Omniyat Al Hajri, Director of Public Health and Policy Division at HAAD, said: “HAAD, in partnership with other government agencies and the private sector, is working towards ensuring a 100 per cent smoke-free Abu Dhabi.
"Clean indoor air is important to maintaining the health of Abu Dhabi residents and visitors, especially children who are highly susceptible to indoor air pollution. HAAD’s goal is to make all workplaces and indoor public places 100 per cent smoke-free.”
HAAD has launched a 'Abu Dhabi Says No to Tobacco' programme to reduce smoking.

“Good idea, but how will it be managed ? Who will take on the responsibility of enforcing it. And why for a day, why can't smoking be banned in restaurants, pubs, clubs, etc to name a few places. All the best, but a good start anyway.”

“Great initiative Dubai. May I suggest that to ensure success of the World No Tobacco day on 31st May 2012, the health authorities should felicitate passive smokers who tolerate the smoking habits of their near and dear ones. If direct hitting public service messages have not yet resulted in desired effect, I am inclined to think that nothing can more disgraceful than to see your loved ones being acknowledged for your life-threatening habit. If you cant stub the habit, can you snub your loved ones?”

“Perhaps this could have your new year resolution of qutting to smoke but still some where down the line you failed due to some reasons. For some It might just work only on Jan 1, the day of the new year an then its back to square one. Its like you wish each other Happy New year and then its the same old year. We have The world tobacco Day just around the corner and its not too late for you to decide whether you want to quite smoking. I have heard chunks of people saying that smoking gives some sort of a relief. Well, For how long? After you finish one pack, you get stressed and tensed when problems keep popping in. All of us know that smoking is bad for our health. The pack it self clearly indicates. Enough of awareness and programmes have been set up but its you and only you who need to take a stern decision and Quit. Even if your surronded by people who smoke. Its determination , confidence and will power that you need. its simple. You may be wondering, what happens when you quit smoking permanently? Well, there are many benefits you will reap as soon as you quit smoking. Some of these benefits will affect your health and finances while others will positively affect your social being and your relationship with the community or society.
Despite the fact that you know some of the common benefits you would acquire, your addiction to nicotine has blinded you of the many important benefits you may get. In general quitting smoking will give you a longer life by preventing dreadful diseases in your body that is caused by carbon monoxide, nicotine and other poisonous substance that smoking gives. There are many sicknesses which you can acquire from smoking, from a simple ulcer, to a severe cough or cold or worse a lung cancer. Most countries now have laws limiting the smoking area in public places. Most common places are public transportations, restaurants, malls and airports. The world of smokers is getting smaller.
Some countries that are still being lax in giving freedom to smokers are doing it because of the huge amount of tax they are generating from tobacco companies. But generally, smokers are losing a place in this world .Honestly, non-smokers detest the bad and awful smell that smoking brings. Why do you think in most of the places yo usee a small board stating smoking is prohibited.
Smokers often say that smoking gives them peace of mind, well that's a lie and you know it. You feel that peace when you smoke because you're calming yourself from withdrawal symptoms. How many times have you felt irritated because circumstances won't allow you to smoke or you have ran out of cigarettes? How many times have you panicked when you see that you only got 2 or 3 sticks of cigarettes left? How many times have you gone out in the middle of the night just to satisfy your cravings of nicotine? And how many times have you been borrowing money or searching for coins just to buy a pack? Now, tell me, which of these circumstances or situations have given you peace of mind? You decide. Happy World Tobacco Day. Lets see how many of us can control Not to smoke for the next 24 hours.”
