England and France failed to impress but advanced to the European Championship quarter finals on Tuesday, though debate raged over another goal line controversy.

England's Wayne Rooney returned after a two-match ban to score in the 48th minute and secure a 1-0 win over Ukraine, which eliminated the Euro 2012 co-hosts.

However, Ukraine were denied an equaliser when the Hungarian match officials ruled Marko Devic's 70th-minute shot had not crossed the line, despite replays indicating it had done.

France progressed as Group D runners-up despite losing 2-0 to Sweden, whose forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck a stunning volley in the 54th minute. Sebastian Larsson scored in stoppage time.

France will play Spain on Saturday in Donetsk, and England face Italy in Kiev on Sunday.
