Ex-Italian MP with mafia links is nabbed at Dubai airport
A former member of the Italian parliament accused of colluding with the Italian mafia has been arrested in Dubai.
Amedeo Matacena was apprehended at Dubai Airport last Thursday after coming off a flight from the Seychelles.
Police had been tracking his movements following an Interpol arrest request from Italian police. However, neither Dubai Police nor the Italian consulate general have yet said if Matacena had been living in Dubai since fleeing his home last June.
Matacena, a former MP for Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, was jailed for five years in 2010 for collusion with the mafia in Calabria. He went on the run last June when his appeal failed.
On Tuesday it emerged that Matacena may be facing another bribery charge, dating from 2005, an Italian newspaper said. A spokesman for the judiciary department in Calabria confirmed to 7DAYS that Matacena had been arrested in Dubai but said he could not comment on Matacena’s movements since his disappearance.
