Fewer road fatalities in Abu Dhabi
Road deaths fell by 72 per cent in Abu Dhabi's Western region during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, police said yesterday.
Suhail Swayah Al Mazroui, head of the western region traffic section at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Department, said seven people died in road accidents in that period, a massive drop compared to statistics for the same period in 2011.
Critical injuries declined by 40 per cent, from 15 in 2011 to seven this year.
The officer said many accidents were caused by drivers going at excessive speed, negligence and lack of attention, bursting of car-tyres, and sudden veering off the roads.
He said intensified road safety awareness campaigns have helped reduce accidents.
