In response to the letter by Patrick, who rightly suggested that smokers watching football matches were a real poison, I can sympathise as I have been in the same situation.

Luckily, around Media City it is possible to watch games without having to suffer from inconsiderate people.

Actually this is an ironic situation as you would assume that watching activities linked to sports would make smokers considering their health - puffing and exercising are generally not considered compatible.

The other aspect of it is that there is law in Dubai that stipulates that smoking is not permitted in public places. So how can most sport bars get away with it?

Clearly it is all well to have campaigns to make people aware of the danger of tobacco but this is not enough. If people can flout the law, with no representative of local authorities prepared to enforce it, I do not see any changes in the future.

Enjoy the last match!

“EE - nowadays I noticed a lot of places have provided outdoor areas - like at Mercato at that Italian place upstairs, Hard Rock at Festival City even at Biella at Wafi they had an outdoor area. Very few places left with indoor smoking as most hotels I have gone to even in Abu Dhabi have an outdoor area. But I still prefer the Barasti - good atmosphere.”

“I quit smoking 2 years ago and even if the smell now does bother me I don't get all the moaning going on.

In Dubai there are places that allow people to smoke and there are places that don't. Fact. Smoke/ing/ers bother you? Then go to a place that does not allow smokers to light up!

But if at the end you decide to go somewhere that allows people to smoke then stop winging and try to enjoy your night!”

“I'm a non smoker and I wouldn't mind if they designate some bars as smoking bars and have that clearly displayed at the entrance. It is your choice then as a non-smoker if you want to go in or not. If you decide to do, then you have no right whatsoever to complain about smoking.”

“Forget during football matches how about on regular nights out. I don't even mind the second hand smoke that much it's more the smell on my clothes and hair that I don't like.

It's not like these places have windows either, stuck in a corner of a hotel but a lot of western countries don't allow smoking in bars now and it's nice to be out drinking and not come home smelling.”

“Goodness me still going on about this - though problem solved but I guess some people are still in that mind mode of - Our way or No Way. I know that Dubai has complied with International Laws regarding Indoor Smoking and even at certain Outdoor Events - so this guy goes to one place and now its time for Major Crime Squad to get into action because someone upset his match. Final match today and hope Mr.Patrick will find a place or I presume we will get another mouthful tomo.”

“I think you'll find the law only covers public places which serve food! Which is why many still having smoking areas, and if it's more a bar than a restaurant then they allow it.”
