IIFA 2012 winners: Ranbir Kapoor for Rockstar and Vidya Balan for The Dirty Picture
Vidya Balan continued her winning streak by picking up the award for Best Actress in a leading role for ‘The Dirty Picture’, while Ranbir Kapoor came out victorious for best male performance for his role in ‘Rockstar’ at the 13th International Indian Film Academy Awards ceremony (IIFA) in Singapore.
Ranbir said: "I am grateful to have got the opportunity to work with masterminds like Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman and my grand uncle Shammi Kapoor in this film."
‘Rockstar’ also won the best music direction award for AR Rahman, best lyrics for the song and best playback singer male for Mohit Chauhan for ‘Nadaan Parindey’.
'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' bagged the top awards of the night, including Best Picture, Best Story, Best Director for Zoya Akhtar and Best Actor in Supporting Role for Farhan Akhtar.
Along with the statuettes for great performances in 2011, Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Rekha and Ramesh Sippy as well as Dia Mirza being honoured with the Green Award. Ramesh Sippy took to the stage for his Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema, lauded by a trio of greats including, Dr Kamal Hassan, Javed Akhtar and Rishi Kapoor, all three of whom have worked closely with the director.
Best Actress nominee Priyanka Chopra also paid a heartwarming tribute to yesteryear actor Rekha on Saturday by dancing to some of her popular Bollywood songs.
Priyanka’s performance came ahead of the special honour conferred to Rekha for outstanding achievement in Indian cinema at the ceremony. She started off with a remixed version of ‘In aakhon ki masti ke’ from ‘Umrao Jaan’ and went on to groove on songs like ‘Salaam-e-Ishq meri jaan’, ‘Pyar do pyaar lo’ and ‘Pardesiya’. However, her performance rose to a different level when she was joined by Rekha herself.
After receiving the special award, Rekha, known for her films like ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Silsila’, said: “I would like to dedicate this award to my producers who have inspired me and the young actors of our industry like Ranbir Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Priyanka Chopra… who are super talented. I am proud that I continue to be a part of the film fraternity.”
Celebrating the magic of Indian Cinema, the IIFA Awards was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium where actors Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar played host to the three-day Videocon DDB IIFA Weekend. The duo kept the audience entertained throughout with their jokes and camaraderie.
The show also saw star-studded performances by Sonakshi Sinha, Bipasha Basu, Prabhu Deva, Shahid, Rishi and Ranbir Kapoor.
The festivities, which started on Thursday, attracted some of India's biggest elebrities. The actors who did not attend this year included Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Sonam Kapoor.
