Jewellery worker jailed for 'lunchbox theft'
A jewellery company worker who stole Dhs4 million of gold fillings by smuggling them off his company premises in his lunchbox has been jailed for six months.
The 33-year-old Filipino was handed the sentence by Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday after it had heard he smuggled out 30kg of the precious metal over two months.
The Filipino was caught by cops when the owner of a jewellery shop called cops when he tried to sell the gold to him.
An official in Dubai Police said: “We arrested him and found a small bag containing gold filings. He confessed that he robbed it from his company.
“He said he had smuggled it out in his lunch box. He confessed to doing it seven times over two months and said he then tried to sell it to the jewellery shop.”
