Developer Nakheel said on Thursday that it has released funds to service providers at Marina Residences on Palm Jumeirah.

Residents had feared district cooling was going to be switched off on Sunday because of unpaid services fees.

But in a statement, the firm said it had now collected some of the millions of dirhams in outstanding fees at the development.

The statement added: “We have released funds to allow common area facilities – such as cooling and pools – to continue. The pool contractor is now back on site and facilities will be back to normal as soon as possible.

“However, millions of dirhams remain unpaid by some owners, and we will continue to work with the Owners Association at Marina Residences to collect this money and address the issue of defaulters.

"It is wrong that some owners pay their way while others do not.”

Pools had previously been drained after Nakheel said there was not enough money to pay the pool maintenance contractor.

And residents feared air conditioning could be next after ‘Final Notice of Disconnection’ letters addressed to Nakheel were put up around the development saying Dhs2,052,559 was outstanding on the common area account.

“If the stated amount is not settled by June 23 2012, our services to the building will be disconnected on June 24,” the notices, which were later taken down, added.

“While I appreciate the situation that Nakheel finds itself in; unpaid fees from owners, it is not the residents' fault. If Nakheel is unable to secure payment from the owners, it is the fault of Nakheel, not the tenants. Nakheel needs to find a better method to collect such fees.

Additionally, now that Nakheel is going to (at some point) refill the pools, will they correct the continuously running chillers, unrelenting fire alarms, or non-handicapped compliant doorways corrected? There are many other issues as well. I suspect not.

Finally. The article refers to the Owners Association. Seriously? Is there really a recognized owners' association? Could we please receive a list of recognized owners' associations in Dubai? If there is more than one listing, I would be surprised. If there really were an approved owners' association for Marina Residences, they would have switched from Nakheel as their asset managers long ago. Once the government has created a process for creating an owners' association, I'm sure there will be one.”

“I am reading this article in disbelief at the total waste of precious water which Nakheel chose to drain away. Surely there are more energy efficient ways to make a point? Like lock the gates etc. It is well known that there is very limited water supplies on the Palm which is clearly evident with the dead palm trees all over the place, so to waste water like that is unforgiveable.”
