Son sentenced to 80 lashes for threatening mother with knife
A son has been sentenced to 80 lashes and two months in jail after drunkenly threatening his mother with a kitchen knife when she refused to let him use the family car.
The Emirati man was handed the punishment for consuming alcohol, endangering the life of his mother and making threats. He had admitted all the charges, but denied threatening behaviour.
The court had been told the 26-year-old became angry when his mother refused to give him money and banned him from using the family car, back in February.
“He grabbed the blade and attacked his mum,” the prosecution said. “The mother ran away from her son and locked herself in a bedroom to avoid being hurt.”
The man broke down the bedroom door and his frightened mum leapt from the first-floor window of the family home in Abu Dhabi.
“She feared her son would attack her with the knife,” a police officer said. “She plunged from the window and hit the ground.”
The woman suffered multiple fractures. The defendant claimed to be suffering from psychological problems.
A medical test confirmed that he had been drinking.
“I did all that because I was drunk,” the man testified in court. He added: “But I didn’t threaten to attack my mum.”
He was also fined Dhs2,000 for threatening to attack his mother, damaging the door of her bedroom and driving without a licence.
