A crazed driver who sped through Dubai at 200kph and drove on the hard shoulder to avoid radars has had his modified motor seized by cops.

Dubai Traffic Police said the Emirati, who is in his 20s, told cops he sped away from police patrols that pursued him because he was in a rush to get food.

The incident happened as the motorist drove his 4x4 towards Oud Al Mutaina in Dubai at around 2am.

A police official said: “The motorist was driving at a high speed and was recklessly changing lanes. He didn’t care about the safety of other road users.

“A police patrol tried to stop him when he approached Al Khawaneej roundabout but he became more wild and turned off his lights so that we could not identify his number plate.

“The engine had been modified to increase the speed of the vehicle. We finally arrested him when he stopped.

“He confessed that he was driving at 200kph and said that when he saw a radar he drove on the hard shoulder so it did not flash him.”

Head of the traffic Police Department, General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, added: “I can’t believe that his family didn’t know he had modified his vehicle in this way. His father came to apologise and wanted to take the car back but we refused. It will remain impounded.”

The driver has been referred to traffic prosecution to decide what charges he will face.

“Why not let such people do community service in Dubai heat? Well I hope this concept starts in UAE too.”

“Well the offender certainly wasn't expressing the spirit of Ramadan with his actions was he? Quite the opposite in fact! Showing no regard for anyone else, acting selfishly only thinking of himself. Shame on him! He should be locked up until the end of Ramadan as a punishment. The only way people like this learn a lesson is to be dealt with harshly. If they want to kill themselves on the road - fine! But don't put innocent lives at risk with selfish actions.”

“@ Amir, funny! In Ramadan one is supposed to act just like he/she does the rest of the month. No special treatment or leniency on crimes. He did this at 2am not 7pm when he is fasting so he had eaten hours before he chose to commit this crime and endanger the lives of the public. Make a mistake?! The guy deliberately turned his lights off to avoid being caught! He could have killed someone!

For thoughtless people, the only way for you to see the error in what you said is for you or someone close to you to be a victim of such a reckless driver. What a ridiculous statement! Yes everyone seems quite offended by what you said and saying you didn't mean to, makes it much worse.

It's people with a twisted mentality that do such crimes because they expect only a fine and a slap on the wrist! Disgusting!

As for the driver, throw him in jail, take his license away and punish the father with more fines than he can afford. Irresponsible parents are just as bad as their offending offspring.”

“Fining people who drive recklessly is pointless. They probably set out for the evening knowing they are going get fined and they don't really care. these people should be asked to do community service, or even better, have their license cancelled! this way they would have to go through the whole process of paying for endless numbers of road tests and sit through 5 hour long classes on how to drive safely. Bring them back to square one!!!”

“IMAGINE THEY DON'T KNOW YET WHAT CHARGES SHOULD BE ISSUED!!! RIDICULOUS.. GOOD THERE IS NO ACCIDENT HAPPEN BUT WHAT IF IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT.. SO THEREFORE GIVE HIM A LESSON FOR WHAT HE DID.. BOOK HIM IN JAIL NO MATTER ITS A RAMADAN OR NOT.. IF YOU FORGIVE HIM WITHOUT ANY FINES OR IN JAIL, HE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN..”

“#Amir........SO you feel it acceptable that driving over 200KM per hour and putting the lives of others should be dealt with forgiveness??

To inconsiderately jeopardize lives in any form shouldn't be handled with forgiveness. it should be dealt with the FULL FORCE OF THE LAW, no matter what time of year this is!”

“to Amir: wouldn't you consider this reckless endangerment?? He put the lives of others at great risk. Any idea what will happen to you and your family if a car hit you at 200 kph??? This is NOT about someone making a mistake. For this kind of people, this kind of driving is away of life, and unless drastic action is taken, the UAE will continue to rank at the to in the number of traffic related fatalities.”

“I agree completely that what the guy did is wrong,
but during this holy month to call for JAIL!! and the shaming of someone?
Are you guys so perfect? how would you feel if you made a mistake and was not given another chance?
Al Hamdullillah No one was hurt, Give him a fine, confiscate his license and car but Jail or anything else would be to extreme.
Mercy, generousity and forgiveness, That's what this month is about.

    Didn't mean to offend anyone,
    God bless.

    Assalam Aleikom!”
