Start with the retailers in the dress code issue
I’m writing regarding the trending topic about the issue of a dress code in the UAE.
I personally think it’s the fault of the retailers, customers and authorities. If the authorities do not want anybody to wear short shorts, as we call them, they should not allow retailers to sell them! I was shocked today when I went to the mall and saw that most of the shops around were selling shorts that are only enough to cover your backside!
The authorities should not allow these shops to sell shorts which are that short and it will stop the people from buying them.
-

If the shops sell longer shorts, like up to the knee, then won’t the customers purchase those longer shorts and wear them?
I think the government should hand out pamphlets about the dress code in the UAE and educate not only the tourists but also the expatriates about dressing up in an Islamic country. Even though most malls and the Metro have posters about wearing inappropriate clothes, I still see people almost semi-naked there and no one is warning or stopping them.
Even as a lady, I cannot stand to see this. In general, I am not against wearing shorts but I think you should think twice about what country you are in before choose your clothing.

“People buy shorts to wear to the BEACH and in their own gardens, and in hotels...... no need to wear them at the mall.
In nearly every single case where I have seen a shockingly small outfit and sauntered over to the person in order to talk to them, they have been Russian speakers, or German or Eastern European and often with very little English. Yet all the marketing for this by the authorities is in English and Arabic.
They should reprint their flyers and posters into Russian and start thinking about this out of the box, by bringing their campaign to airlines and hotels in ALL languages”

“What century are we living in? Why don't we all just stick brown paper bags over our heads and be done with it!”

“Ban shorts. Brilliant idea,... NOT!!!!! Better yet, provide uniforms to all. I think that may even work out in a better way.”

“I doubt very much they are 'semi naked' but at least it sounded dramatic.
Indeed, you're right. Start changing too many rules and it may become a 'hardship posting' to live here, somewhere people don't neccessarily want to be based due to certain restrictions on their lifestyle.
We're not talking wild parties here it's everyday clothing”

“Uff.. we are making this issue so much more complicated than it really is! If you are a person who could choose to buy what you want to wear - most likely means you are earning, educated, and came from a civilised & cultured country. Therefore, which part of "DRESSED DECENTLY & APPROPRIATELY" that one could not understand is beyond me.”

“You try shopping for "modest" clothing at these retailers it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You spend your day in and out of change rooms trying on all sorts of clothes and end up going home with nothing. Once again another head scratcher, signage all over the mall banding on about dressing respectfully but the mannequins in the shop window display are in some cases barely covered themselves. In all honesty the only shop in the mall that stocks appropriate clothing is the burka shop. I dress in what I feel comfortable in and what is appropriate for my age, I am not 2yrs old and don't need to be assisted with my choice in clothing.”
