Tennis fan in verbal volley at fellow spectators
Before I move into my rant, I want to congratulate Dubai Duty Free and the Dubai Tennis federation for staging a fantastic two weeks of tennis.
The atmosphere around the stadium was fantastic and there was a great vibe. However, when entering the stadium it went downhill fast. I was lucky enough to have tickets for the ladies final and for the men’s quarters and final, these tickets are not cheap to buy.
So my question to those in the top tier of the west stand on all three evenings is: Why bother turning up? Because you didn’t come to watch the tennis! Most of the people around me spent most of the time on their mobile phone or had their face into a packet of crisps or a plate on nachos.
Others spent most of their time talking, standing up to take photos or running up and down the stand to collect more fast food. Now I have no problem with anyone enjoying themselves and sampling the many food & beverage outlets, but why do the stewards allow them to eat and seek those noisy snacks while a game is in progress. It was like feeding time at the zoo and not an appreciation of the game and the splendid efforts of the players.
I know I’m not alone on this subject; many people around us were expressing the same views. So to those who bought tickets to watch the tennis and didn’t watch is WHY? And to the stewards - WHY do you allow people to ruin the experience for real tennis fans who are trying to watch the action in relative silence while rude people are more concerned in feeding their faces and talking on their mobile phones from start to finish?
This would never happen at Wimbledon or any other top tennis event.
