A couple were criticised by police in Sharjah after their car was stolen with their tiny baby inside over the weekend.

The couple had left their month-old girl in the back of their white Toyota Prado with the engine running on Friday night at around 9.50pm while they went into a shop.

But thieves took off in the 4x4 with the month-old baby girl Lailas on board.

The pair told police they had left the infant “for two minutes” to go into the shop.

A frantic seven-hour search was carried out by Sharjah Police who also put out a twitter alert for the Prado AD with its registration number.

Major Mohammed Al Shihi said: “The parents should have taken more care and not left the baby alone in the car.”

He added: “At 9.52pm we received the call, then sent out patrols to search the area.”

But it was a member of the public, Ahmed Ibrahim Al Shamsi, an Emirati from Sharjah, who eventually spotted the car at 5am just a few kilometers from where it had been stolen with the baby safe and well inside.

Al Shihi said: “The baby was taken immediately to Al Qassimi Hospital where she was found to be in good health.”

The family was re-united just in time for Eid prayers early on Saturday morning.

The major said it was the biggest response Sharjah Police ever had to a social networking alert.

He said: “We received a lot of calls, of people thinking they saw the car, people who wanted to help. So many people cared because a baby was in the car.”

The Twitterati heavily criticised the couple for leaving the baby in the car alone. One even said: “Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have children.”

Nobody has been arrested.

“If this happened anywhere outside these countries they would lose that baby to Social Services. But alas the poor child is made to suffer these irresponsible parents for the rest of its young life. Shame of them for posing in this photo as if they did nothing wrong - idiots.”

“SORRY TO SAY BUT THEY ARE BOTH CRAZY.. THEY DON'T DESERVED TO BE A PARENT.. EVEN A MATTER OF MINUTE LEAVING THE BABY IN THE CAR THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. SO MANY THINGS HAPPEN TO OUR LIFE FOR A SINGLE OF MINUTE ONLY, RIGHT.. SO, THEY DON'T CARE THE WELFARE OF THE BABY. WHAT MENTALITY THEY HAVE BOTH.. PUT THEM IN JAIL TO LEARN A LESSON FROM THEIR MISTAKES.”

“Well guess who's not in the running for the Parents of the Year award? Who leaves an infant in a car alone and that too in this weather? Especially with the number of luxury cars that get stolen? Anyway thank goodness she is safe. They were too lazy to take the child out of the car seat so they left her to go shopping? I wonder why there are so many people in the world who cannot have kids and yet there are some who clearly don't deserve to be parents.”
