UAE visitor fights drunk driving fine
A motorist who was fined Dhs2,000 for drink driving has appealed against his conviction.
The South African visitor was handed the penalty by Abu Dhabi Criminal Court after he was found guilty of drinking alcohol without a license and driving under the influence of alcohol.
At the Abu Dhabi Appeal Court yesterday, the man admitted to drinking alcohol a few days before he was stopped by cops but denied driving under the influence.

South African motorist denies driving under the influence of alcohol
“I had alcohol a few days after I arrived here,” he said.
“I didn’t know it was forbidden to drink alcohol without a license.”
His lawyer argued her client had no idea about UAE laws when he arrived and that there was no evidence he was drunk when he was stopped by cops.

“If he didn't know about the laws when he landed here, he was bound to hear it from the people he was drinking with. I'm from South Africa and it is common knowledge amongst us that coming to UAE includes a string of laws, and the consumption of alcohol being the most talked about.”

“So does this mean you have to carry your liquour license with you if you drink in a bar? Because I have read about people getting arrested in bars also after consuming alcohol and they did not have their license on them.”

“FACTS What we should do when we see drunk drivers: Drunk drivers get on the roads, endangering our friends Sometimes, we witness these drivers on the road, weaving in and out of lanes or traveling down a highway going the wrong direction. Quite often, responsible citizens are left asking themselves—what do I do? First, stay as far away from the other vehicle as possible. Second, do not try to pass the vehicle or signal the driver to pull over. Doing so could result in a collision. Third, take notice of the license plate number of the driver along with details of the vehicle including make, model and color. However, make sure you don't compromise your own safety trying to obtain this information. Finally, pull over and call 999 or 112. Give the exact location of the vehicle, including the name of the road or cross streets and the direction the vehicle is traveling. Give a complete description of the vehicle and the manner in which the vehicle is being driven. Now telling about the driver the driver was not having the driving liesence so he should get fine and for 2 months stay behind the bars.”

“Not knowing the laws is no excuse and driving without a license is a crime in all developed countries. Drunk drivers should be fined because it is really dangerous because the driver could die or get injured in a crash and most likely will crash into some other innocent car leaving them with injuries or death. So it is important that drunk people do not drive cars!”

“Was he driving under the influence or not ? Did the police perform a blood test or a breathalyzer ? Do tourists have to apply for a alcohol licsense too ? how would they do this as you need your employers signature to qualify ? As he says "I had alcohol a few days after I arrived here" - so we can't have alcohol in our home country cause we will get arrested in the UAE ? Come on people, have any of you been asked for your drinking license at any of the establishments that sell alcohol.”

“It's always a no-no for drivers to travel with their wheels when they took alcohol and being drunk. The UAE visitor knew that he is in the middle east and it's so disappointing that he is so naive with the laws of the country. One should be smart enough to at least study or have a bit in mind the do's and don'ts of the country that you are visiting. You are always responsible in everything you do.”
