The mystery of a young brain tumour sufferer who disappeared in the UAE was solved yesterday.

Her husband revealed she was found dead at her ground-floor flat two months after she was reported missing.

Ekaterina Kovalik, 29, is thought to have died around January 22.

Ekaterina Kovalik, 29, is thought to have died around January 22.

After no one had heard from her in weeks, her worried mum, who looks after Ekaterina’s seven-year-old daughter in her home town in Uzbekistan, found a friend in Dubai who helped lodge a missing person case at the end of March.

They also contacted 7DAYS in an appeal for information to find her.

Yesterday, Ekaterina’s husband, Ezeem, said his wife’s body was found slumped in a bath at her apartment shortly afterwards.

Kovalik, who was forced to leave Dubai a year ago, said: “Ekaterina was ill and was trying to go to Uzbekistan where treatment was much cheaper and to see our daughter.

But she died alone.

“The last time I spoke to her on the telephone was January 22. After that I kept phoning and sending emails but there was nothing.

“I called the police, to report her missing. Eventually with the help of a schoolfriend of my wife’s, a police case was raised on March 27.

“I had to send them our marriage certificate and our daughter’s birth certificate for them to open the case.”

It’s understood police forced their way into shop manageress Ekaterina’s ground-floor apartment in International City on March 28.

Officers found her dead in her bath.

Kovalik said a post mortem examination revealed his wife died from the brain tumour.

A Dubai Police spokesman confirmed the incident, saying: “We received a call about a missing woman back in March, and we found her dead inside her flat.

“Following an investigation and a forensic doctor report, we found out that she died of natural causes.”

“@Wheeliebin : You are free to disagree with me, my friend. This is not a debate but a forum to express our opinions. Meanwhile, let me tell you simple facts that I have noticed. 2 construction workers died in a building near my office when the ledge they were standing on collapsed. It was never in the news, people don't know their names or what caused that ledge to collapse. 3 days later, a young British boy fell to his death after a night of drinking. I can't remember how many weeks it has been since the incident, I still see his pictures and articles in the news.
I am sorry for all three of them and may their souls rest in peace, but do you see how even the media doesn't care when its two workers from Afghanistan and all the noise it makes when it's a western expat ? When something happens to a western expat, so much is written about what happens that I can clearly remember each of their names and,in cases, the buildings which they fell from. Do you even know how many Eastern European, Asian and African women go missing in the UAE ? Don't you think their parents and friends are not concerned ? It's just that no body listens to them. I am not saying it is any particular nationality's fault . I am just pointing how biased things are when it comes to dealing with people and cases. Like Orwell said '' .....some animals are more equal than the other''. I don't mean to start an argument , I am only sharing my opinion.”

“Then I don't agree with you, Bitter Truth. The family & friends of Timmy decided to do something about it & did. They started the campaign & have kept it in the news. It has nothing to do with his nationality & everything to do with the concerned people who decided not to sit around doing nothing. Keep nationality out of it.”

“I totally agree with TheBitterTruth, such a massive campaign is launched to find a missing british sailor and nothing was done to help this poor girl and her family. When her story was published in march it was obvious her flat was checked and now it seems that police was collecting papers from her home country to launch her case. It really scares me, as it seems no one cares here about expats unless consulate, embassy is involved. We are facing so many obligations towards the country, culture, etc and all of us are vulnerable, unprotected when it comes to our safety and wellbeing. Shame!! What about neighbours, she was dead for 2 months, and no one felt anything?”

“This story makes no sense why did the family wait so late to raise the alarm and the cops took their own time too. I guess first nationality has to be checked before anything right? Very strange they would want this lady's marriage and daughter's certificate. So if she wasn't a mother and wife they would have done nothing? RIP Ekaterina and my deepest condolences to your family.”

“no-one thought to check her home first to rule out possibilities that she'd packed up and cleared out, or look for clues? Where her neighbours not questioned to keep an eye out - they would've noticed no movement. Did no-one smell anything??? Strange story!”

“Is no one else concerned that she was reported missing and instead of going straight to the flat and checking there, the police waited 2 MONTHS for documentation before looking for her? How very sad.”
