7DAYS

Today’s world is a dangerous place where all of us are in a race against time.

We have greater access to amenities and luxuries but we do not have the peace of mind and happiness we had a few years ago.

Despite the advent of technology, our routines are hectic and stressed. We’ve all become extremely self-centered and artificial and barely have time to spare for others. Our ultimate goal in today’s world is nothing but survival. We are losing the basic elements in life; humanity, patience and kindness.

  1. letter

I have developed a fear of today’s world where people have become so obsessed with themselves. Earlier, there was a time we felt sorry on the loss of an innocent life.

People have turned a blind eye to the problems and worries of others. Just as we lack patience, similarly, the food that we consume lacks taste and flavour these days. Even the best of restaurants cannot offer the taste that existed in basic items in the past.

Today, nothing holds value except monetary benefit. People are increasingly becoming intolerant in life and lack patience. Time is flying, people are dying in groups each day. All these feelings and issues surrounding us clearly indicate that there is something seriously wrong with our world today. To me, this is a major cause of concern. We need to stop, think and reflect on life and understand the reasons that led us to less stress and more peace of mind in the past.

“@amohanjay, thank you so very much for your encouraging words. I am glad that there are people who understand what I'm trying to convey through this letter of mine.

@Gavtek, my dear, if you find my letters to be some kind of wishy washy nonsense as you called them, then why are you wasting your precious time in reading them and worse even, to comment on them. We all the truth deep down, don't we ? :)

@New Crunch, my humble request to you is kindly stop assuming things about me. I wonder what makes you think I don't work. The fact that I am working or not has absolutely nothing with this entire discussion. Also, I am happy that you read my letter once, at least. Also, considering your enthusiasm in proving me wrong in every possible way gives me an impression that you are jobless too. I don't mean to offend you, but that's what I felt. Lastly, once again I thank you and all the other fellow readers for your valuable comments. Please be informed that I still hold on to what I have said and I understand that I cannot make everbody happy, so disagreement are more than welcomed. However, I suggest that we should avoid deviating from the topic and assuming what we feel like about others. This is intolerable !”

“@Fatima: thank you for the suggestion to read your previous letter, but already done that once and I believe it was once too many.

I hope you do not take any offense to this, but it is my understanding that you do not work, eat junk food coz you have a hectic life, and then you write a letter complaining about lack of time. I think you already have an 8 hour advantage (at least) / day in US=Regular working folks. As for me personally, I still have time to enjoy everything life has to offer and contribute to the well being of others.
You will also find hundreds of expats in Dubai involved with charities. My conclusion: DO NOT project your short comings or deficiencies on others.”

“'Educated illiterates' - what does this mean then? As far as I can tell, most of the responses here have been perfectly literate so that just leaves the educated portion of your attempted insult which isn't actually a negative thing to be. Also, the word you're looking for is 'criticism'

Fatima, I believe your words were 'regular fast food consumer'. Couple this with the fact that you wrote into a daily newspaper to complain about the prices of fast food items being hiked by a dirham or two, I do believe that New Crunch has a perfectly valid point.

Basically, the overall issue is that you've written some wishy washy nonsense that in your mind makes you sound insightful and philosophical. People who used to be kind are still kind. People who are nasty now were still nasty then. None of these changes you are talking about have actually happened. Food has not lost its flavour, people still get upset by the loss of innocent life.

The only thing that happens is that people get older and have more responsibilities and things to worry about. This happens to everyone, just because it is happening to you, it does not mean the world is changing, it is continuing to function as it always has. War, famine, crime, stress, heartbreak and anything else you can think of are not new concepts, they are not increasing any more than they were previously and you're not going to change anything by reflecting or posting cringeworthy images on Facebook to 'raise awareness'”

“Fatima I appreciate your interest to write about the present situation. Very few would take time to write about it, never the less sub-consciously all of us know it.
The more we talk about it the better, and more people become aware of this situation. Please ignore the negative critisim that some educated illiterates may express in this regard.

    God bless.”

“@Dear Rodzz, I really appreciate your suggestion and shall bear these in mind the next time I sit to compile a letter :)
As for people being offended by the use of 'we', I didn't have any intention to hurt anybody's feelings. I have just said and expressed the truth according to my perspective and I am not surprised if people tend to disagree with me on my thoughts.”

“@New Crunch, in one of my letters, I did mention about the increase in the price of fast food. But, as far as I can remember, I never said or confessed about being an addict to fast food or a loyalist to any other type of food for that matter. I suggest you should read that letter again to clarify. Thankyou ! :)”

“Whilst I won't talk about society as a whole, I'd say that for Dubai at least, the place is more human today than it was a decade ago. From the late 90s to the crash it was a place that was pure greed, now it's rediscovered some of its original humanity and charm.”
