“Well I get ones telling me I have 25,904.87 aed in my bank account. So obviously the 'new' Simcard is ... infact.... not new at all. I will also join the Pizza place ban !! Sounds fun, and the right thing to do. What these companies don't realise is that sms adverts are actually an invasion of privacy and quite unwelcome.”

“I agree, it is after all a good offer for us at the end of the day. We will be benefiting from it. I think it is not the fault of the company that it is being sent late in the evening, I think it is because of the network. Even Etisalat is sending sms in the wee hours. Trust me, this offers will be useful for you one way or another.”

“@ expat27 @Starlulu & jojanelab - there are hundreds of good offers out there so I go to the places that do not spam me. If every restaurant acted as irresponsibly then we would all be receiving a thousand texts a day. These guys are just desperate and I don't want to eat at a desperate restaurant!”

“I too receive unsolicited text messages the worst offenders are the malls, and Etisalat. Apparently some of these outlets buy databases of people and that is how they spam people, I was informed of this by Dubai Mall when I complained about their spam sms and emails they were sending me. I get spam sms from Home Centre, Pan Am , hotels, car companies, clothing stores like Aeropostale which I dont even shop at, the worst is MAF run malls. I made the huge mistake of registering my details in the raffle coupons years ago and now I get spam sms from them whenever an outlet in their mall opens or even for when their branches in other cities open as if I care!!!! They are the worst offenders, I now just give an email address and fake number when filling in raffle coupons (do they exist because I never see winner announcements or photos). If a company thinks I will visit their establishment because of an unsolicited sms they are sending me, they are sadly mistaken. I receive some of these sms even at 2am.Thank goodness my phone is on silent mode. A temporary solution would be to call the company directly eg if you get an sms from a clothing store or mall call them and ask for the head of marketing, speak to them firmly and tell them to take off your number from all their marketing lists and database. You can also block sms (this sometimes works and sometimes doesnt) by typing B and then the code of the sms or name of the company and sending it to 7726 which is a free service. Eg B 2921 and then send it to 7726 or B Deira City Centre and then send it to 7726.”

“I don't mind so much the half a dozen or so advertising text messages I get per day when I'm here in Dubai. Even though most of them are completely unsuitable to me personally (I don't want to buy a new car - I can't drive, etc.) But when I'm abroad, greedy Etisalat charge me for receiving them whether I want them or not - now that REALLY annoys me!”
“Given that I have never authorised anyone to send me SMS marketing messages, how come I receive at least 2 messages a day from random steakhouses and pizza shops (that I have never visited and now never will) as well as the endless drivel that my telecom provider sends me.
Does anyone find this phone spam useful or has anyone discovered how to stop them?”
