'First the tennis, now the cinema - are the rude folk following me?'

7DAYS

Twice in one week! Following my rant about the lack of etiquette at the tennis, I wanted to tell you about my unpleasant experience at the movies on Monday.

Just as the movie was about to start, the mobile phone of a guy sat two seats away rang. He proceeded to confirm an airline booking and gave the caller his credit card number along with the security code etc. He finished the call just as the movie started but then he started complaining to his wife about a rude operator on the phone and her inability to listen!

I had no choice but to ask the gentleman to consider the others in the cinema. He apologised and said he would move to the back of the theatre to continue his conversation! Eh? I suggested that he maybe continue the conversation at the end of the movie. He told me that maybe I should find another seat where I would be unable to eavesdrop. His wife asked him to be quiet so he proceeded to tear a strip off her.

All went quiet for about 30 minutes then his phone went off again. To our delight he headed for the exit and out of my life forever… wrong! He returned 20 minutes later with a huge bucket of popcorn and the dreaded nachos. The noise was unbelievable, he was munching at such a pace I’m sure he must have chewed his hand at the same time.

Then the mobile went off again - he told the caller to call back as he was eating. My movie evening was ruined and again I ask the question: Why do these people bother?

“Should have told him that you now have his credit card number and security number, then get up and leave the cinema - would give him something to think about and possibly delay his urgent flight.”

“Some decent ushers will actually tell that person to either turn his phone off/silent and stop talking or get out. You should have complained, got your money back and told off their management for not ensuring your viewing experience isn't ruined by these fools. It was clear even his wife can't stand him, I feel sorry for her!”

“I agree, I am amazed at the behavior of some people, I have only been to the Cinema once in Dubai once was enough, I found it irritating with lots of people talking and disturbing when a group of young women started clapping and laughing at a scene of a young girl being killed, I will be staying at home with a rented DVD much better.”

“Dear Not amused, I feel your pain. We went to watch a movie at Mirdiff the week-end. Snitch (PG15) I was amazed by the number of young children watching this movie. Infront of us was a couple with their children, no manners what so ever they where all under the age of 11. They where bumping chairs and talking out loud no discipline from the parents. Someone complained and the wife just clicked the tongue. Please have respect for others when watching a movie we pay the same price as all the others watching a movie. After all you go and watch a movie to get some peace and quiet and to relax not to sit with a high blood pressure rising by the minute.”

“Complaining about the phone call I can understand but complaining about what the guy was eating. Get over yourself.”
