Three years for killer dad who beat son to death over bad grades
A father who killed his son with a computer cable because the boy kept his bad school grades secret has been jailed for three years.
Abu Dhabi Criminal Court handed down the sentence on Wednesday after it found the Emirati man guilty of killing his 12-year-old son.
Prosecutors said the father beat the boy to death after he refused to show him his results. The boy was allegedly afraid to reveal the grades because he feared his father would react badly.
“I didn’t expect this. He was not raised to behave this way,” the Emirati dad said in court. The father, who prosecutors claim is a drug addict, had in previous hearings admitted handing out beatings to “discipline” the youngster but denied intentionally killing him.
The court, however, rejected his claims and convicted him of murder.
The judge said since the child’s other family members chose not to seek the death penalty, the maximum sentence he could pass was three years. The boy’s mother and grandfather told the court that they accepted the father’s claim that he did not mean to kill the boy.
The family’s housemaid had found the child lying unconscious on the bedroom floor, naked and covered in blood. She called an ambulance but the child died before reaching hospital. A medical report showed the boy had extensive whip marks to his body and that he died from the beating.
